Each time Nick Westergard speaks at an event, he offers his slides as a free download…of course in exchange for email addresses.

Nick is the chief brand strategist at Brand Driven Digital. And that’s his surefire trick for increasing your email subscribers.

The slides are something attendees always want, giving you their email addresses is how they get it. Talk about a win-win!

A lot of businesses starting out have no list…Nada, zilch, zero, nothing!  losing a lot of money in the process.

When marketers say the money is in the list, you roll your eyes and end it with “we’ve heard this a million times before”. The same way you’ve heard All that glitters isn’t gold.  Doesn’t make both statements less true!

During the Black Friday sales, emails are credited for contributing 25.1% to the bottom line of businesses.

Additionally, Campaign Monitor says every $1 spent on email marketing generates $38 in ROI.

This is raw untapped gold, you can’t sleep on it! Still not convinced it’s worth the trouble?

Why you should really start building an email list

1. You can take control

A very good saying “it’s not very wise to build a mansion on rented land”.

Your huge social media following is fantastic, but what happens when Instagram decides to go on a 1-month break?

To be specific, social media is a key ingredient in growing a profitable business. It’s an easy way to connect with your audience and show your human side. But it is flawed.

You cannot control it.

Forrester Research says  90% of emails get delivered to the intended recipient’s inbox, whereas only 2% of your Facebook fans see your posts on their News Feed.

But what you do own, and can control is your email list. It’s all yours. And if Instagram decides they are shutting down for 6 months, you’ve got your email list and your money bag.

2. You want to sell products/services on your website

People who buy products because they’ve received an email marketing them spend 1385 more than people who do not receive such emails.

McKinsey estimates that the average order value of an email is at least three times higher than that of social media.
Don’t believe it? Think of it this way. For most people, their inbox is a sacred place. If you’ve got access, it’s because they are interested in what you have to say.

People hate to see their inbox cluttered up with junk emails and are swift to unsubscribe from such newsletters. But they are content to scroll through the endless clutter on Instagram.

Translation? They want to hear what you have to say. There’s just one valid question. What are you saying to them?

3. You could rebuild your business with your email list

Say you lost everything.

Your website, your blog, your social media accounts…everything. You can start rebuilding by reaching out to your community–the people on your email list.

You have their ears and they will listen to you.

4. Your list is an asset…that could be sold

Sometime down the line, you are looking to sell your business and retire or start another business.

Know how digital marketing businesses get valued for sale? your warehouses, factories, offices, inventory and a great website are taken into account. But your value as a company shoots up the roof with a sizeable and engaged email list.

Remember the phrase the money is in the list? Your list can get you a few more zeros on that cheque.

5. It’s the easiest way to keep in touch

As a business, you always have an announcement to make or something big to share.

Not a lot people will intentionally visit your website or social media pages to keep updated with you but what they will do is check their email… could be once a week or every hour.

So if you want to launch a new product or service, or have a big announcement to make, your email list is an excellent list to use and re-use.

A little warning…

As awesome as having an email list is, you are better off with no list at all than buying a list.

Do NOT buy an email list.

There are online sources promising you thousands of email subscribers for a couple of dollars. Don’t do it.

Most of the subscribers you get are either fake or dormant or gotten without the permission of the owners. Sending an email to these people makes you come across as a spammer.

Regardless of email quality, it will not get the attention it deserves.
